“Bone Fide Heroes”
Mar 10 – “To Hollywood, coal mining probably is the least glamorous job that they would only ‘pretend’ to do. But in our territory, coal miners are bona fide heroes,” says Amy Townsell in The Messenger from Madisonville, KY. Townsell sings the praises of “proud and loyal” coal miners and urges everyone to give them a hearty thank you for the work they do. Along with the glowing appraisal of the people and communities joined by coal mining, she raises concerns about the future of mining with the Obama administration. Through the EPA, the Obama administration has demonstrated a desire to end mining in Appalachia with holds on dozens of mining permits and threats of increased regulation. “Who knows the future of the coal industry, under Obama’s administration?
